FAQs on CBT Donations

Why should I donate to the Chesapeake Bay Trust?

The Chesapeake Bay Trust, established in 1985, is the only non-profit grant-making organization in Maryland dedicated to restoring the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers.

What does that mean?

That means thanks to donors like you, we are able to give money to organizations and non-profits who are doing the hard, "boots-on-the-ground" work to help restore the Chesapeake Bay, educate schoolchildren on the importance of restoration and engage the community in clean-up projects and other activities.

Where does the money go?

The Trust has nine different grant programs that funding from donations are allocated to. We are very proud to say that 90% of all donations go right to the Trust's restoration and environmental education programs. For the 10th consecutive year, the Trust has received the highest (“4-Star”) ranking by Charity Navigator, placing us in the top 1% of charitable organizations nationwide. You can see where your money goes first hand by visiting our flickr page.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes, direct donations made to the Chesapeake Bay Trust are 100 percent tax deductible. After you make your donation, you will receive a thank you letter that you should save for tax purposes. Unfortunately the costs associated with purchasing and/or renewing the Bay plate are not tax deductible. Please consult your tax preparer for more information on the deductibility of charitable gifts.

Will I be contacted by the Trust in the future?

The Chesapeake Bay Trust will only contact you if you would like us to. We have two great e-newsletters, Bay Stewards and Grantee, that are full of information about events, news and information about the Chesapeake Bay. If you don't want to be contacted by us, you don't have to be. You can even donate anonymously.
