Examples of a Model Project
Wilmer Park- Kent County, MD
The Town of Chestertown successfully obtained a living shoreline grant in 2010 to remove nearly 600 feet of bulkhead on the Chester River, and replace it with tidal marsh and stone sills. An extremely diverse marsh, containing eight species of native grasses, three species of bulrush, and important plants like Amaranth have populated the new marsh.
Jamestown 4-H Center- James City County, VA
Volunteers at the 4-H Camp and Youth Center in James City County, Virginia successfully prepared two successive grant applications to protect and enhance 250 linear feet of shoreline on the lower James River. The site, under construction in 2011, is used by thousands of 4-H campers every summer.
Hail Cove- Easter Neck NWR, MD
In 2009, 17 partners joined together to protect a sensitive tidal cove on Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge, with the assistance of a living shoreline grant from the Trust. While providing improved habitat to fish, shellfish, terrapins, and other species at the formerly eroding site, the project has protected 120 acres of important aquatic beds inside the cove.
