Model Projects

What makes a model project?
1. Clear goals
2. A specific target audience that makes sense relative to the goals of the project
3. A message and method designed to the audience to meet the goals of the project
4. Key project partners
5. Building upon existing work and connecting to existing community watershed stewardship efforts
6. Potential for lasting impact
7. Evaluation at all stages of the project

Example Model Projects

1) Anacostia Riverkeeper, Anacostia River

The Anacostia Riverkeeper, the Chesapeake Bay Trust (CBT), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the US Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS), are embarking on an outreach effort targeted at subsistence anglers designed to address a key public health concern. Anacostia Riverkeeper has hired local communications and marketing firms Ruder Finn, Communications Visual, and OpinionWorks to do so.
The project includes a fish consumption study followed by a public awareness campaign to inform anglers, their families and friends about the risks of consuming fish from the Anacostia River. The goal of the project is to:

      1. raise awareness and understanding of Anacostia River health issues,
      2. change attitudes and/or perceptions, and
      3. lay groundwork in order to persuade anglers to modify their behavior to reduce the risk

This is an innovative project that follows best practices for awareness campaign development. Survey work of this community will likely yield highly transferrable data and will serve to influence outreach messaging and methodology. The project has a strong advisory committee that has been organized to oversee implementation. Data gathered from this study will define the scope of the problem—the kinds of fish caught, how many people are eating fish from the river, and how often this fish is consumed. Although this initiative on its own may not define the entire scope of subsistence fishing nor will it necessarily solve the problem; it is intended to be a starting point for a broader, longer term, comprehensive solution.
