Model Projects

Model projects include, but are not limited to: 

  • Development or adaptation of programs to support implementation of the Maryland Environmental Literacy Plan, contained in the Governor’s Children in Nature plan. More information can be found at http://www.dnr.state.md.us/education/children_nature
  • Field components of a Meaningful Watershed Experience.  The Trust will consider requests for one-half of field trip costs and program fees. See the “Guidance for Commonly Funded Projects” section below for additional specific guidance on elements to include in project development and the proposal. 
  • Schoolyard habitat restoration projects, including, for example, rain gardens, larger-scale bioretention cells, tree plantings, wetland creation, or other projects on school grounds that promote environmental education and involve students. See  the “Guidance for Commonly Funded Projects” section below for additional specific guidance on elements to include in project development and the proposal.
  • Service learning or restoration experiences at locations other than school grounds, including transportation costs where applicable. The Trust will consider requests for one-half of field trip costs.
  • Curriculum and other material development or integration to more closely align environmental education programs with county and state student academic achievement standards
  • Professional development teacher trainings that include field based instruction
  • Targeted efforts to develop sustained environmental programs where the need is greatest

Recently funded projects include:

Spa Creek Conservancy: Grant for $24,376
This funding will help provide for an outreach intern, community outreach materials, strategic planning with the Center for Watershed Protection, monitoring, mapping, evaluation, and board development.

Herring Run Watershed Association: Grant for $20,000
This funding will help provide for a program assistant and executive director, contractual support for a phone-a-thon, website, graphic design and printing needs, an annual report and promotional materials, as well as cover some costs for outreach events.

St. Mary’s River Watershed Association: Grant for $10,000
This funding will help provide for administrative costs, printing and mailing for membership brochures and newsletters, a membership event, the update and printing of the Hilton Run management plan, strategic planning, and board training fees.
