What is the Chesapeake Bay Trust? The Chesapeake Bay Trust is a private, nonprofit grant making organization whose mission is to promote public participation and awareness in the protection and restoration of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries in the state of Maryland.
When was the Trust created? The Trust was created in 1985 by the Maryland General Assembly. With the introduction of the tax check-off in 1989, the number of grants the organization was able to award increased significantly. In 1991 the Treasure the Chesapeake license plate was added as a major funding source, further enhancing the Trust's ability to provide significant funding for a variety of projects benefiting the Chesapeake Bay. The idea for the Chesapeake Bay Trust is attributed to Ellen Fraites Wagner, who served under former Governor Harry Hughes. Her role in the creation of the Trust is celebrated each year, as the Trust awards the Ellen Fraites Wagner Award to an outstanding volunteer in the state of Maryland who has demonstrated a significant and effective commitment to the Bay.
Who is the governing body for the Trust? The Trust is governed by a 19-member board of trustees, including five ex-officio positions consisting of the president of the Senate, the speaker of the House, and leaders of the Departments of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment. The remaining 14 members are appointed by the governor to staggered four-year terms and represent business, education, conservation, local government and the general public.
How is the Trust's money spent? Approximately 90 percent of the Trust's annual revenue directly funds on-the- ground restoration programs. For the sixth consecutive year, the Chesapeake Bay Trust has received a four star rating from Charity Navigator, America's largest independent evaluator of charities.
Where does the Trust get its funding? The majority of the organization's funding comes from two primary sources: the sale of the Treasure the Chesapeake commemorative license plates, and via the tax check-off through line 37 on the state of Maryland income tax return. Additional funding comes from private and corporate contributions.
How much is the Treasure the Chesapeake license plate? The license plate costs $20. In addition, there is a $5 annual renewal fee.
Can I get a personalized Bay plate? Yes, the MVA offers personalized Treasure the Chesapeake license plates. However, if you have an existing vanity plate number or wording, you must specify that when ordering your plate. You can call the Trust or the MVA for more details.
Does this tax check-off automatically deduct $1 from your taxes? No. This check-off is for whatever amount you choose. As stated above, the average donation is $26, although we have received donations ranging from $1 to in excess of $1,000.
Is the tax check-off tax deductible? Yes. It is tax deductible from your tax return for the following year (e.g., if you donate $21 from your 2007 tax return, you may itemize this on your 2008 tax return).
